Water Heater Installation | Geyser Installation Method Statement

This page gives a brief method statement for water heater installation or geyser installation in compliance with the approved design, drawings, approved material submittals and project specification.

Prior to installation of Water Heater, the supervisor and foreman will verify and ensure that all the safety requirements have been complied and necessary control measures are in place.

The supervisor will also verify that all relevant approved latest revisions of shop drawings, technical submittals, inspection and test plans are in the work place for installation reference including the installation procedures.

Site supervisor will examine surfaces/walls to receive the Water Heater and ensure that all installation requirements are met including tolerances for maintenance etc. Water heater installation will not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

Installation of Water Heater

Unless otherwise specified, all installation  shall be in accordance to approved shop drawings and contract specifications.

Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement of water heater, final location of water heater installation must be coordinated with consultant. Install water heater as indicated unless deviations to  layout are approved on coordination drawings.

Examine areas and conditions with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance, operation and maintenance of water heater.

Transfer the  water  heater  from  the  stores to  the  working  area, taking into account the make, model, capacity, and tag number, this will ensure the correct water heater is installed at the correct location.

Arrange the installation of water heater according to the approved shop drawing, making sure that the units are correctly oriented, with  sufficient access / space for operation and maintenance purposes.

Install water heater according to manufacturer’s installation instructions and project specification.

Check the location and mark where the brackets / supports of the unit to be installed. Make sure that the brackets / supports are suitable of the unit’s weight/size requirements.

Drill holes on the specific marked area with suitable size of drill and clean the drill holes afterwards before installing the brackets / supports.

Use suitable fixing nuts and bolts as per recommended by the manufacturer.

Make sure that the brackets / supports are properly aligned and leveled before installing the water heater / geyser unit.

Before lifting the unit in the position, ensure that the lifting supports/sling are suitable for the weight requirements of the unit.

Slowly lift the heater/geyser at the desired position and tightened it with the support brackets properly with the required torque as recommended by the manufacturer.

Check the piping supports, locations and power supply routing locations is in co ordination with water heater and piping layout and ensure it does not obstruct the space around water heater from removal and maintenance.

After fixing the geyser/heater unit, make piping connections for hot and cold water supply with its corresponding valve requirements.

Connect hot & cold water piping with shut-off valve, check valve and union.

Connect the P & T valve.

Make sure that the hot and cold pipe connections with valves, drain valves, accessories are as per approved shop drawing and material submittal.

Ensure that piping connections are well joined using approved jointing methods (i.e. PPR Pipe using Fusion Method or Copper Piping using Dielectric Connection).

Water connection for inlet / outlet will be made with flexible pipe connector, heater to hot water outgoing pipe.

All water heaters shall have a drain that shall be connected to nearest floor drain.

Thermostatic mixing valve to be installed in all toilets and kitchen areas as per location shown in the approved shop drawing.

Install temperature and pressure relief valves in top portion of storage tanks/heater. Use relief valves with sensing elements that extend into tanks. Extend relief valve outlet with water piping in continuous downward pitch and discharge onto closest floor drain.

Finally set the temperature of hot water at 60 degree.

Install electrical power connections as per approved drawing. All electrical components, devices and accessories shall be as per British Standards and Local Authorities regulations requirements.

Final fixing of the electrical connection of the unit (i.e. Temperature, Level Sensor and etc.) shall be as per manufacture requirements.

Tighten electrical connectors and terminals according to manufacturer’s published torque-tightening values.

Provide grounding wiring as per approved drawing/supplier’s instructions and ensure compliance to manufacturer’s instruction while installing Water Heaters.

During installation & after the units have been successfully inspected, check & clean the unit to remove all debris.

Cover the geysers with polythene sheet to secure & protect the unit from moisture and dust ingress until units are tested commissioned and handed over to the client.

Testing, Maintenance & Cleaning

Open the cold water line in order to fill the water heater completely until water flows uninterrupted from the hot water faucets.

When the water heater is completely filled, close the hot water faucets and switch on the electricity supply.

Visually check for proper functioning of water heater & check if temperature of hot water is attained as per the setpoint.

During maintenance check proper functioning of safety valve every two months by opening & closing the test lever.

The heating element should be checked annually for scale formation, caused by impurities in the water supply.

Also the anode should be checked annually and replaced when worn for more than 60%.

For cleaning the element or replacing the anode follow below procedure:

Switch off the electric supply to the water heater.

Open the hot water taps until water is not hot .

Close cold water supply line to geyser.

Put a vessel of suitable capacity under the water heater.

Drain the water heater by removing the maintenance cover, unscrew the heating assembly flange and allow the water to fall in the vessel.

Clean the container and the heating unit assembly from scale by using a suitable acid or by gently scrapping of the scale.

Replace anode / heating element if required.

Remount the heating assembly flange.

Open cold water supply until water flows without interruption from hot water faucets.

Close the hot water taps and check for eventual leakage around the flange.

If there is no leakage, replace cover.

Then switch on electric supply to the water heater.
