This Instruction addresses the training of new boom truck operators including the refresher awareness and training of experienced operator. This Instruction applies to all operators of boom trucks on construction project sites.
All Boom Truck operators must hold a valid license before operating the truck at project sites.
Also as an additional safety requirement, where applicable they must hold valid national license for operating heavy plant / equipment and valid registration.
The Project Safety Manager or a nominated person(s) shall be responsible for ensuring that all boom truck operators have valid certificates and vehicle certificates.
A record of persons attending the pre test & training is recorded in their personal file.

Pre Start Walk around Inspection
a) Check all fluid levels including fuel, hydraulic, brake and oil.
b) Check radiator for loose bolts and any leaks. If the engine is still hot, do not loosen the radiator cap to check the coolant level as it can cause serious injury.
c) Inspect the engine compartment for oil, coolant and fuel leaks.
d) Clean and check all lights for broken bulbs or bad wires.
e) Check cab for loose bolts, broken windows or other damage to the cab.
f) Position yourself in the operator’s seat and make adjustment to be in comfortable position while operating machine.
g) Check fire extinguisher.
h) Check and adjust all mirrors.
i) Keep operator’s compartment clean and clear of debris.
j) Check to see that accessory equipment is available, including:
- Tyre chocks.
- Slings for loading and unloading.
- Outrigger footing to ensure riggers are stabilized.
- Clevis and hooks.
- Any other accessory needed for the specific job.
Starting the Machine / Boom Truck
Fasten seat belt.
Make sure all control levers are in neutral
Make sure park brake is set and outriggers raised.
Turn the start switch key to on.
Check all gauges, warning lights and horn as engine warms at idle.
Boom Truck Operation
Boom Operation
a) Set park brake
b) Secure control shift with provided lock plate.
c) Place outriggers in position using proper footing material.
d) Place warning sign on door to cab.
e) Place tyre chocks in plate, two in front and two in rear.
f) Remove control lock plate and engage rear hydraulics by shifting control to the left and back.
g) Operate the boom in a reasonable and safe manner. Be sure the rigger is clear at all times. Do not overload, use slings and hooks with safety latch or clevis.
h) Use designated and proper signals. Ensure that everyone is clear before moving boom or load.
i) Loads should not be wrapped with boom cable. Use designated slings and hooks with safety latch or clevis.
j) Use a control tag line rope or approved device to adjust load. Do not attempt unnecessary hand adjustment stay clear of load.
k) Stack and secure material in a safe orderly manner.
l) Do not tow or drag materials with boom.
Cable Winch Operation
Follow the five procedures mentioned above when using cable winch as well, as those listed below.
Unhook secured cable chain hook and set properly for release.
Activation of the winch to release cable:
Disengage motor drive with safety shift in neutral.
Adjust accelerator to lowest point.
Push clutch in and ensure foot is placed on pedal firmly and securely for positive control.
Pull control shift directly back to engage.
Release clutch slowly, this will active winch operation
Adjust accelerator to desired winch speed.
Procedure To Retract Cable
a) Follow all to the above procedures with the exception of no. 4.
b) Push control shift directly forward to engage.
c) Keep cable directly in line of cable drum and object being handled. Do not cross cable over support braces or force drag over stationary frames.
d) Use proper signals and ensure everyone is clear before activating winch in either direction.
e) Secure cable after task has been completed to prevent cable from falling onto roadway when vehicle is in motion.
